Earl Grey tea is a type of fermented black tea harvested from the Camellia sinensis plant, so Earl Grey tea does contain caffeine, like all black teas.

The Sophistication of Earl Grey

Earl Grey, a quintessential tea, boasts a rich history and a captivating flavor profile. Traditionally, it features a Black Tea base, most commonly from regions like China (Keemun) or India. This base provides a robust and slightly malty foundation. The star of the show, however, is the Bergamot. If you didn't know, Bergamot is derived from the rind of a fruit called the Bergamot Orange, commonly grown in Italy. It looks more like an unsophisticated, and rather ugly Lime more than an Orange! Tastes great though!

Origins of Earl Grey:

Whilst it is the Black Tea base that gives Earl Grey most of its flavour, you should still consider the Bergamot used. Bergamot cannot be eaten fresh, unlike other citrus fruits. However, natural Bergamot oil is often used in various foods, fragrances, lotions and, of course, is used to flavour Earl Grey teas. Earl Greys that use natural Bergamot produce the best flavour.

Bergamot: A Citrusy Twist

This unique citrus fruit, resembling a lime in color and boasting a complex aroma, is not your average orange. While Bergamot shares some characteristics with its citrus cousins, it offers a distinctive blend of sweet, floral, and slightly bitter notes. These characteristics are captured in the essential oil extracted from the Bergamot rind and used to infuse the Black Tea leaves. The result? The subtle yet unforgettable citrusy essence that defines Earl Grey tea.

Beyond the Classic: Earl Grey Variations

While Bergamot reigns supreme, modern palates can explore a world of Earl Grey variations. Some blends incorporate orange oil for a sweeter citrus twist, while others might introduce floral notes like lavender. For a smoky experience, some Earl Greys incorporate Lapsang Souchong, a Black Tea known for its smoky character. Even the base tea can vary, with some Earl Greys featuring Green Tea or Oolong Tea for a lighter and more nuanced taste.
